With an inspiring soundtrack, this capture-the-flag classic may still hold some charm for gamers looking for a low-res nostalgic kick. Return Fire puts you behind the controls of either a helicopter, armored car, rocket launcher or truck, and challenges you to navigate obstacles on islands to destroy enemy bases. The game's graphics, considering its age, aren't too boxy or basic, and give the game enough realism to keep it engaging.
Vehicle controls, however, aren't difficult but simply awkward, and may take some time to master. Our favorite part about Return Fire is its soundtrack, which takes a page from the award-winning Apocalypse Now movie with Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries" as its main theme. While the sound quality is not stellar, it is sufficient enough to be entertaining. If you're looking for a simple shooter challenge and aren't picky about graphic quality, Return Fire may offer a brief but amusing romp.

Classical standards play for each vehicle and synchronize with the action. For instance, when you grab the enemy's flag with your jeep, the frantic trip back to the bunker is accompanied by "Flight of the Bumble Bee. Return Fire's elegant design and amusing sense of humor make it an original addition to the 3DO library.
Small touches, like a marker to show which of the missions you've finished, would've made the game almost perfect. Never mind, though-the gameplay is filled with cinematic flair that's generally reserved for cut scenes, and all of its elements are entertaining with little fluff. Who says war has to be hell?
Return Fire reminds me of the weeks I spent playing Herzog Zwei. That game is the closest comparison. Return Fire sports some really good graphics, lots of strategy and great music. In an industry flooded with sports and fighting carts, this comes as a breath of fresh air. The game play is refined, and each vehicle plays differently. Two-player competitions are also a plus. It's a top-rate 3DO title. Not being a big fan of war simulation games, I was pretty impressed with Return Fire.
Although I thought the graphics were dithered, it didn't detract from its fine play mechanics. Unlike most games, its full-motion video was not the main emphasis. The music and sound effects totally get you into the game. War sim fans will love this, and casual gamers will not be disappointed. Not bad. Return Fire scores serious points for Its originality in a market filled with copy-cat titles.
I can't remember when I've had this much fun with a game, especially when you jam with two players. The classical soundtrack fits the game perfectly. If you still don't own a 3DO yet, you should. This is an example of what the 3DO can do. Instead of using lots of live-action video displays, it resorts to down-and-dirty game play. Normally, I don't get into all the war-torn genre, but this game has great control, very good graphics and tons of interaction plus game play to keep your attention.

Return Fire 2's not the instant, simple joy that RF fans praised, but maybe that's a good thing. Sometimes, changes are for the better. The main difference between this one and the first is that Return Fire 2 is in true 3-D. So does the flip over to an "in-the-action" view work? It's too early to tell, but what we do know is that this sequel puts you in the driver's seat of one of several different vehicles, in an array of locales. The vehicles include: A tank, a jump jet, an attack chopper and a good, old-fashioned Army jeep.
Terrains range from a barren, icy tundra to the hot sands of a desert, and most others in between. Also expect a Head-to-head Mode where you can blow up your pals. The only title sponsored by the US. Although not much is known about this upcoming release, it is obvious that Return Fire 2 will be a hit if it includes all the original elements plus some surprises. Return Fire II contains all the explosive carnage of the original, but this version also features photorealistic 3D settings, new weapons, and changing weather conditions.
