Solid stain is very similar to paint in that it sits on top of the wood, bringing its own color to the wood.

All forms of stain, however, are more susceptible to the elements than paint is. Both solid and semi-transparent stain exist in the medium between being thick and durable enough to protect your exterior for years and being thin and light enough to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Choose a different color from what you already have going on and you could add as much as 25 percent to that cost. I don't know about you, but that's the kind of motivation I need to stay focused on frequently tending to minor repairs and maintenance.
